The Basics of Blackjack

Blackjack is a card game where the player tries to get a total value of 21 or close to it without going over. The cards have different values, aces are worth either 1 or 11, face cards as 10, and the rest as their index value. The goal of the player is to beat the dealer’s hand. The dealer’s hand must be made up of cards that have a value of 17 or higher or she will bust. The player’s first two cards are dealt and the player may choose to stand or hit (request more cards) based on a set of rules.

If the first two cards are an ace and a face card or 10 (a count of 21 in just two cards) it is called a “natural” and the player wins one and a half times their bet. If the dealer has a natural as well, she immediately pays each player their bet and collects their bets from those who don’t have a natural.

The table for the game is usually a semicircular piece of equipment that can accommodate varying numbers of players, with the dealers standing behind the table and chip rack. When you’re ready to place your bets, touch the casino chips across the bottom of the screen to select the amount you want to wager. Your bets, winnings and credits remaining can also be viewed in the bottom left part of the screen.

There are many variations to the game of blackjack but the basic rule is that each player must beat the dealer’s hand. This is achieved by drawing a hand value that is higher than the dealer’s or by beating the dealer’s hand with a better one of your own.

Some players use a system of counting cards to improve their chances of beating the dealer but this is not legal in many casinos. Other players use simple strategies such as hitting on 16 when the dealer has a 7 or higher showing, standing when the dealer has an ace, splitting tens, and never betting on insurance.

Some blackjack games offer side bets such as insurance and even money. These are usually offered on the basis of a mathematical advantage and can be profitable if you play smartly. However, the most important thing to remember is that you should always be confident in your knowledge of the rules of blackjack and have realistic positive outcome expectations. This will reduce your state anxiety and increase the enjoyment of playing the game.
